With National Lipstick Day around the corner on July 29, what better time to learn the secrets for keeping your lips as flawless as possible?
Here are my 4 steps for lips that last all day.
1. Exfoliate your lips. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin that can cause feathering and scaling. You can use an at-home microdermabrasion set, a Clairasonic brush with facial scrub (my favorite is Arbonne's Micro-Exfoliating Cleanser) or a lip scrub.
For best results, exfoliate your lips the night before you have something special coming up--and use a scrub that is more grainy than creamy.
2. Prep lips with foundation and powder. Covering your entire lips with your foundation helps create a solid base, much like a primer. I use a brush to go right over my lips with my Arbonne liquid foundation each morning.
After foundation, apply a loose powder to help set it. My absolute favorite is RCMA's No-Color Loose Powder.
3. Line the outside AND inside of lips with liner. Outline your lips with liner first to precisely define your lip shape. Just don't forget to fill in the inside! This helps prevent feathering and creates yet another base.
When I'm not using any of my Arbonne lip liners, I usually grab one of my other two MAC lipliner favorites--Soar or In Control. They're both neutral and complementary to many different lipstick colors.
4. Use the most enduring formula you can tolerate. What do I mean by this? This is where you'll have to weigh comfort with endurance. Is it more important for the lip color to last as long as possible, or would you rather reapply a few times with less stiffness?
The most enduring lipsticks are liquid lipsticks, but they can be drying for those who are prone to dry lips or are bothered by the feeling of them. My favorite liquid lip is Limelight Enduring Lip Color in Wedding Cake, but when I want a more natural, creamy product (especially when my lips are dry), I opt for Arbonne's Rose Smoothed Over Lipstick.
MAC lipsticks are a good compromise because they are harder to apply (meaning you have to press a little harder to push the color on) and that's typically an indicator of long last wear. My favorite MAC lipstick (shown in the video) is Satin Lipstick in Twig. My other neutral pink favorites are Brave, Fanfare, Mehr, Cosmo and Fast Play.
